Summary
The AAUW International Fellowships support women who are not U.S. citizens or permanent residents to study or research full-time in the United States. The program has been running since 1917 and aims to promote education and equity for women, especially those who will apply their skills to benefit their home countries and empower women and girls.
A small number of awards are also open to Graduate Women International (GWI) members for study in any country other than their own.

1. Fellowship Amounts
Master’s degree: $20,000
Doctorate degree: $25,000
Paid directly to the fellow in two installments (start & mid-point of fellowship term).
Covers tuition, living expenses, books, supplies, childcare, etc. Cannot be used for costs before or after the fellowship term.

2. Eligibility Requirements
Applicants must:
1. Identify as a woman.
2. Be non-U.S. citizens or permanent residents.
3. Be admitted or enrolled in their first master’s or doctorate degree at the time of application.
4. Start the program on or before Sept 1, 2026 and finish on or after April 30, 2027.
5. Hold at least one academic degree equivalent to a U.S. bachelor’s with minimum GPA 3.5/4.0.
6. Study full-time at a U.S. accredited institution (or, for GWI members, in another eligible country).
7. Reside in the U.S. (or research country) during the fellowship.

Previous AAUW fellowship/grant recipients (except certain small grants).

4. Renewal Option (Master’s Only)
Up to 5 master’s fellows can receive 2 years of funding.
Must keep GPA 3.5+ and submit renewal forms/transcripts by May 30, 2027.

For Master’s

Clear plan to use skills to benefit home country.
Contribution to women’s empowerment.
Well-structured study plan and timeline.
Preference for:
Applicants from underrepresented countries in AAUW history.
First-time international study.
Applicants living in their home country at application time.
For Doctorate
Academic excellence and originality in research.
Potential to make significant contributions to the field.
Feasible research plan with clear funding/timeline.
Same preferences as above.

Two recommendation letters (not from friends/family, no form letters).
Proof of highest degree (with certified English translation if needed).
Official transcript of highest degree earned.
GPA proof on 4.0 scale (or equivalency report from WES/ECE/Scholaro).
English proficiency proof (TOEFL, IELTS, Cambridge, Duolingo, or proof of English-medium study).
Admission or enrollment proof.
GWI membership proof (if studying outside U.S.).
Certified translations for all non-English documents.

9. Tax & Visa Info
Fellows are responsible for obtaining the correct visa.
U.S. taxes: Fellowship stipend is usually taxable at 14% or 30% depending on treaties.
